This Holiday season, Oribe’s partnership with French mosaic artist Mathilde Herrero blends ancient techniques and modern visual storytelling. The inspiration: Our iconic Goddess emblem, Oribe Canales’s love of gold and his koi tattoos. The material: Raw stone, Venetian smalti and gold glass pastes. The result: five limited-edition gift sets. Five stories waiting to be unwrapped.

A singular piece originally handcrafted in raw stone, Venetian smalti and gold glass paste, then rendered onto the collection. Ornately layered. Intricately detailed. GOLD, GEOMETRY AND AN ARTIST’S VISION

Inspiration arrived in layers: Gold from Art Nouveau. The geometry, Byzantine. Form and color drawn from the intricate friezes of early 20th-century mosaic art. And of course, koi motifs from Oribe Canales’s sleeve of tattoos––an homage to Oribe the artist, the creator, the co-founder. Influences, converged. Immense beauty, found in minute details, in every moment.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS, REVEALED.

An iconic beginning. Inspired by Oribe’s goddess emblem, the concept was initially centered around the figure of women and goddesses.

As the creative process took flight, the ideas became loftier. More refined and abstract. The focus shifted onto the choice of colors found in the packaging, as well as precious materials.

The final result included a more explicit reference through the koi––a recurring theme in Mathilde’s work––which echoes Oribe Canales’s signature tattoos.

GOLDEN REVERIE. THE MASTERPIECE.

After a series of sketches and visual rewrites, fabrication took place in Mathilde’s atelier in Angers, France. The final piece: Golden Reverie. A majestic mosaic laid in raw stone, Venetian smalti and gold glass pastes.

Mathidle’s years of training in zellige (Morocco’s time-honored technique of fitting hand-cut, glazed terracotta tesserae into geometric mosaics) and tadelakt (a soap-polished lime plaster that cures into a seamless, waterproof skin) shine through.

A reflection of Oribe’s deep appreciation for applied arts, the piece adorns the five custom-crafted gift sets designed for this Holiday season.
